In nature there are few true acts of bravery, only those of survival. A pine tree immolating itself in order to ensure that future forests will grow. Bees defending themselves and the bee children (larvae I suppose) by sacrificing themselves with a selfless sting that leaves them with only minutes to appreciate the future they have saved. And then there are the AICE teachers. Each day throwing themselves upon the percussive, and dangerous plots of Cambridge University to worm themselves into American education (not yet an oxymoron) in order to destroy what little faith our children had in their ability to use citations correctly.
To the seniors that are leaving, I wish them lives where they are able to recognize kindness, and know it is a form of bravery. They need to know that not everything they attempt will be easy, nor should it be.
To the seniors that are staying I guess they already know the part about not everything being easy.
College doesn't define you. You define you. And sometimes to quote Frou Frou (it's a band. Look it up.) "there is beauty in the breakdown." (Seriously, listen to the song "Let Go" It's worth your time.)
This isn't meant to be a commencement speech, but each of you has been seen this year and each of you has made a difference to at least one person. If you ever felt invisible, know that you were not.
If you missed me wearing shorts today, I'm sorry for your loss. I strode across Cypress Bay like a glorious snowy egret, and I was unashamed.
I will miss you.
